A continuous tephrostratigraphic record from the Labrador Sea spanning the last 65 ka ArchiMer
Rutledal, Sunniva; Haflidason, Hafkidi; Berben, Sarah Mp; Griem, Lisa; Jansen, Eystein.
Volcanic ash preserved in marine sediment sequences is key for independent synchronization of palaeoclimate records within and across different climate archives. Here we present a continuous tephrostratigraphic record from the Labrador Sea, spanning the last 65.5 ka, an area and time period that has not been investigated in detail within the established North Atlantic tephra framework. We investigated marine sediment core GS16]204] 22CC for increased tephra occurrences and geochemically analysed the major element composition of tephra shards to identify their source volcano(es). In total we observed eight tephra zones, of which five concentration peaks show isochronous features that can be used as independent tie]points in future studies. The main...

Age modelling of late Quaternary marine sequences in the Adriatic: towards improved precision and accuracy using volcanic event stratigraphy ArchiMer
Lowe, John J.; Blockley, Simon; Trincardi, Fabio; Asioli, Alessandra; Cattaneo, Antonio; Matthews, I. P.; Pollard, M.; Wulf, S..
The first part of this paper presents a review of the problems that constrain the reliability of radiocarbon-based age models with particular focus on those used to underpin marine records. The reasons why radiocarbon data-sets need to be much more comprehensive than has been the norm hitherto, and why age models should be based on calibrated data only, are outlined. The complexity of the probability structure of calibrated radiocarbon data and the advantages of a Bayesian statistical approach for constructing calibrated age models are illustrated. The second part of the paper tests the potential for reducing the uncertainties that constrain radiocarbon-based age models using tephrostratigraphy. Fine (distal) ash layers of Holocene age preserved in...

An occurrence of Tuhua Tephra in deep-sea sediments from offshore eastern North Island, New Zealand ArchiMer
Manighetti, B; Palmer, A; Eden, D; Elliot, M.
We identify c. 7000 cal yr BP Tuhua Tephra in a marine sediment core from offshore eastern North Island, New Zealand. Its mineral assemblage includes aegirine, which is diagnostic for the Tuhua (Mayor Island) Volcanic Centre, and electron microprobe analyses of glass shards yield compositions close to published analyses of the tephra onshore, closer to the source. Associated radiocarbon ages on planktonic foraminifera from the core show that its age lies within the range previously determined for the caldera-forming event that generated Tuhua Tephra. This occurrence, >380 km southeast of the source, indicates that the dispersal of the ash was bi-directional, and that earlier estimates of this tephra's volume may be conservative.

Last glacial period cryptotephra deposits in an eastern North Atlantic marine sequence: Exploring linkages to the Greenland ice-cores ArchiMer
Abbott, P. M.; Bourne, A. J.; Purcell, C. S.; Davies, S. M.; Scourse, J. D.; Pearce, N. J. G..
The establishment of a tephra framework for the Greenland ice-cores spanning the last glacial period, particularly between 25 and 45 Ica b2k, provides strong potential for precisely correlating other palaeoclimatic records to these key archives. Tephra-based synchronisation allows the relative timing of past climatic changes recorded within different depositional environments and potential causal mechanisms to be assessed. Recent studies of North Atlantic marine records have demonstrated the potential of tracing cryptotephra horizons in these sequences and the development of protocols now allows a careful assessment of the isochronous nature of such horizons. Here we report on tephrochronological investigations of a marine sequence retrieved from the Goban...

Tephra horizons identified in the western North Atlantic and Nordic Seas during the Last Glacial Period: Extending the marine tephra framework ArchiMer
Rutledal, Sunniva; Berben, Sarah M.p.; Dokken, Trond M.; Van Der Bilt, Willem G.m.; Cederstrøm, Jan Magne; Jansen, Eystein.
Geochemically distinct volcanic ash (tephra) deposits are increasingly acknowledged as a key geochronological tool to synchronize independent paleoclimate archives. Recent advances in the detection of invisible (crypto) tephra have led to the ongoing establishment, development and integration of regional tephra lattices. These frameworks offer an overview of the spatial extent of geochemically characterized tephra from dated eruptions – a valuable tool for precise correlation of paleorecords within these areas. Here, we harness cryptotephra analysis to investigate the occurrence of two well-known tephra markers from the Last Glacial Period (i.e. FMAZ II-1 (26.7 ka b2k) and NAAZ II (II-RHY-1) (55.3 ka b2k)), in marine sediment cores from the Nordic,...

Tephrochronology and the extended intimate (integration of ice-core, marine and terrestrial records) event stratigraphy 8-128 ka b2k ArchiMer
Blockley, Simon P. E.; Bourne, Anna J.; Brauer, Achim; Davies, Siwan M.; Hardiman, Mark; Harding, Poppy R.; Lane, Christine S.; Macleod, Alison; Matthews, Ian P.; Pyne-o'Donnell, Sean D. F.; Rasmussen, Sune O.; Wulf, Sabine; Zanchetta, Giovanni.
The comparison of palaeoclimate records on their own independent timescales is central to the work of the INTIMATE (INTegrating Ice core, MArine and TErrestrial records) network. For the North Atlantic region, an event stratigraphy has been established from the high-precision Greenland ice-core records and the integrated GICCO5 chronology. This stratotype provides a palaeoclimate signal to which the timing and nature of palaeoenvironmental change recorded in marine and terrestrial archives can be compared. To facilitate this wider comparison, without assuming synchroneity of climatic change/proxy response, INTIMATE has also focussed on the development of tools to achieve this. In particular the use of time-parallel marker horizons e.g. tephra layers...

Tephrochronology of the southernmost Andean Southern Volcanic Zone, Chile ArchiMer
Weller, D. J.; Miranda, C. G.; Moreno, P. I.; Villa-martinez, R.; Stern, C. R..
Correlations among and identification of the source volcanoes for over 60 Late Glacial and Holocene tephras preserved in eight lacustrine sediment cores taken from small lakes near Coyhaique, Chile (46 degrees S), were made based on the stratigraphic position of the tephra in the cores, lithostratigraphic data (tephra layer thickness and grain size), and tephra petrochemistry (glass color and morphology, phenocryst phases, and bulk-tephra trace element contents determined by ICP-MS). The cores preserve a record of explosive eruptions, since similar to 17,800 calibrated years before present (cal years BP), of the volcanoes of the southernmost Andean Southern Volcanic Zone (SSVZ). The suggested source volcanoes for 55 of these tephras include Hudson (32...

Tracing marine cryptotephras in the North Atlantic during the last glacial period: Improving the North Atlantic marine tephrostratigraphic framework ArchiMer
Abbott, Peter M.; Griggs, Adam J.; Bourne, Anna J.; Chapman, Mark R.; Davies, Siwan M..
Tephrochronology is increasingly being recognised as a key tool for the correlation of disparate palae-oclimatic archives, underpinning chronological models and facilitating climatically independent comparisons of climate proxies. Tephra frameworks integrating both distal and proximal tephra occurrences are essential to these investigations providing key details on their spatial distributions, geochemical signatures, eruptive sources as well as any available chronological and/or stratigraphic information. Frameworks also help to avoid mis-correlation of horizons and provide important information on volcanic history. Here we present a comprehensive chronostratigraphic framework of 14 tephra horizons from North Atlantic marine sequences spanning 60-25 cal ka...

Tracing marine cryptotephras in the North Atlantic during the last glacial period: Protocols for identification, characterisation and evaluating depositional controls ArchiMer
Abbott, Peter M.; Griggs, Adam J.; Bourne, Anna J.; Davies, Siwan M..
Tephrochronology is increasingly being utilised as a key tool for improving chronological models and correlating disparate palaeoclimatic sequences. For many sedimentary environments, however, there is an increased recognition that a range of processes may impart a delay in deposition and/or rework tephra. These processes can affect the integrity of tephra deposits as time-synchronous markers, therefore, it is crucial to assess their isochronous nature, especially when cryptotephras are investigated in a dynamic marine environment. A methodology for the identification and characterisation of marine cryptotephras alongside a protocol for assessing their integrity is outlined. This methodology was applied to a wide network of North Atlantic marine sequences...
